HRC Takes a Field Trip
The NEW year means it's time for NEW adventures.
ALL Field Trips are FREE - just show up on time for group photo.
There will be a main walking and running group for each location, but running with a partner is also encouraged! Upon arrival for each, let us know if you plan to run in partners (and how far/long you plan to run) or with main groups.
Some of these locations do not have access to drinking water! Please prepare accordingly!!
We have the calendar set for the first 6 months for our OFF-site field trips:
January 18th at 10am: Fires Creek in Hayesville, NC (COMPLETE!)
Meet at the Fires Creek Picnic area - free parking. There are composting restrooms here but no drinking water fountains/spickets. Creek opens wide at this spot and there are beautiful short hikes that will take you to the top of the falls.
February 22th at 10am: Piney Knob in Murphy, NC (COMPLETE!)
Meet at the Trail head. Please note the road to get there is composed of dirt and bumpy - please drive slow. There are 5 main trails. Noteworthy: The Gobbler is 5.1 miles The Grape Smuggler is 2.1, The Flaming Azalea is 1.6, and the Rhodo-Coaster is 3.75. This will be a trail run or hike meaning the pace will be much slower than you'd expect.
March 22nd at 10am: Murphy River Walk in Murphy, NC (COMPLETE!)
Meet at Konehete Park, Pavilion 3. Parking is free, there are multiple restrooms and access to drinking water. From here, we will start on the paved park trail then hit the dirt, gravel, and boardwalks of the main trail.
April 19th at 10am: Meeks Park in Blairsville, GA (COMPLETE!)
Meet at the baseball fields. This beautiful park was designed for fun in the sun. ~5 miles of trail, consisting of paving, rocks & dirt, leads you around the entire park. Prepare for ups and downs!
Meet at Wesley's Playground across from the McDonalds (573 NE Main St, Franklin, NC 28734). There are restrooms and water access. From here, we will run south. This is a good miler but is an out and back, so any distance and time will be enjoyable. This is mostly paved and is a relaxing and beautiful run.
Now this will be a glorious run. Meet at Thunder Rock Campground parking. There is access to restrooms and water. The run will begin at Thunder Rock Campground and go along the Ocoee River along the Rhodo Trail. This is an out and back, with the whole trail around 8 miles - but is gorgeous the entire way - so any time or distance you want will be worth it. Prepare for gravel, dirt, and boardwalks
July 19th at 9am: back to Fires Creek in Hayesville, NC
A Hayesville favorite. Meet at the Fires Creek Picnic area. NO WATER access but there is a restroom. We'll be running up the forest road (well packed dirt and gravel). Run up until you can't take anymore, then it's all downhill coming back. End your run with a dip in the chilly waters of Fires Creek. It's hard to beat for a weekend run.
